Peru: Land of the Incas

Machu Pichu

Your visit starts in Lima, "City of Kings" and capital of Peru. Founded by Francisco Pizarro, Lima was the colonial capital of Spanish America. Then, on to fascinating Cuzco, one- time center of the Incan Empire and an area rich in archaeological treasures. A highlight of your visit is the excursion to Machu Picchu, the mysterious "Lost City of the Incas". Choose the opportunity to explore the Amazon where expert guides introduce you to the ecological wonders of this incredible region.


Day 1 -- USA to Lima

Fly to Lima from Miami and settle into your hotel.

Day 2 -- Lima

Visit colonial Lima. At the Cathedral you can see the remains of Conqueror Pizarro. Later, visit the beautiful Miraflores and San Isidro areas.

Day 3 -- Lima/Cuzco

Fly to Cuzco, one-time capital city of the Inca Empire. Tour Cuzco and the imposing Inca ruins. Use this day to acclimate yourself to the 11,000 foot altitude.

Day 4 -- Cuzco/Machu Picchu

A full day excursion to Machu Pichu, "the lost city of the Incas". Truly one of the wonders of the world, Machu Picchu was only discovered in 1911. This self-contained city consists of over 200 buildings and is practically inaccessible and unnoticeable from the valley below.

Day 5 -- Cuzco/Pisac/Ollantaytambo

Today's highlights include a visit to the famous Pisac Market and to Ollantaytambo, the oldest continuously-occupied settlement in the Americas. Archaeologists believe construction here was cut short by the arrival of the Spaniards.


CHOICE A

Day 6 -- Cuzco/Lima

Fly to Lima. In the afternoon, visit the Gold Museum displaying a dazzling array of gold, silver and copper works from Peru's many civilizations.

Day 7 -- Lima/USA

Return to the USA and home.


CHOICE B

Day 6 -- Cuzco/Puerto Maldonado -- Amazon Jungle

Fly to Puerto Maldonado. Tour the Madre de Dios river pier and the fruit and vegetable market of Puerto Maldonado. Board your motor boat for the 45 minute trip to the Reserva Amazonica Jungle Lodge. The lodge is built entirely by the native Indian tribes. Begin your exploration of the Amazon as your local guides take you walking through the virgin rain forest around the lodge. Dinner and overnight at the Amazon Lodge.

Day 7 -- Amazon

Guided Amazonian explorations. Your local guide will escort you for a full day of discovery and adventure including boat rides on the river and to Rolin Island --Monkey Island, where six different species of monkeys can be seen. Dinner and overnight in the Amazon Jungle Lodge.

Day 8 -- Puerto Moldonado/Lima

Fly to Lima. In the afternoon, visit the Gold Museum displaying a dazzling array of gold, silver and copper works from Peru's many civilizations.

Day 9 -- Lima/USA

Return to the USA and home.
